My name is Nikki. I am a 32-year-old Craftster and retrophile. 


retro+phile: noun: One who greatly loves artifacts and aesthetics from the past.

     My current passions include, sewing, cross stitching, historical costuming/ dresses, recreating food from the past and historical reality shows. My passion is a blend of many different decades the 1800's, early 1900's 40's and 50's with a splash of 80's. I just can't seem to settle on one, and am not at all impressed with current trends. I am self-diagnosed with mdd, or multiple decades disorder. 
I also love music. I pretty much like everything except country and even then I have been known to make some exceptions. However, 50's rock and 80's rockabilly hold a special place in my heart.

I am interested in all different kinds of entertainment, and love all things retro, vintage, or old fashioned. Hopefully, you will all have fun sharing in this obsession.

Loving my Pattern Collection

If I had one piece of advice to aspiring costume makers, it would be BUY PATTERNS!!  Doesn't matter if you think you will use it anytime soon or not.  If you like it and can afford it buy it.  My compulsion to buy patterns is really working in my favor right now.  I am a self taught seamstress and have had no formal sewing, draping or pattern making lessons.  This being the case I depend on my patterns. This has allowed me to piece things together, alter existing patterns and just some just for their general shape. This is what I have been doing the last couple of days.  I found my perfect Dicken's fair inspiration dress. http://www.antique-frock.com/earlyvictorian/products/dress102.html I am in love this dress.  It is an acutal 1860 gown and being such, there is no specific pattern for this dress.  So, this is where my pattern collection comes in to play.  I am using 2 different patterns to piece together and create this dress. Knitting

I have come to the conclusion that I really need to learn how to knit.  I found these on mod cloth and really want a pair!  They are a throw back with a modern twist, which I LOVE! What do you think?  Any one have any tips on how to start learning?

Going... to the chapel...

Well perhaps not the chapel but the beautiful back yard.  Saturday was Kelly's wedding.  I have to say it was one of the top 2 weddings I have ever been to.  This was only second to a wedding that cost way to much and was held at the Sheraton. First off lets get it over with.  I know what you all have been checking back for... the DRESS!  Yes I finished it on time and it fit amazingly.  She was one of the most beautiful brides I have ever seen.  A lot of excitement, a little makeup and silk go along way.    My girly Kelly has always been a pretty girl, however I had never seen her look so lit up before. The day started off going to the salon and watching Kelly get her hair down.  Unlike most brides, Kelly went with flowing curls hanging down.  She had been growing out her hair for over a year just for this day (don't expect the long hair to last long!)  The curls just softened her so much.   From there it was time to go back to the prep room and start getting re
